Apollon is a choreographic piece for six women, a juicy massacre that questions the neoliberal cult of the body. By drawing upon sources such as classical ballet, freak shows and Body Art, Florentina Holzinger derides Balanchine’s famous 1929 choreography which exalted male dance. Here, the muses and gods are all women, exploding issues of alienation and identity linked with perfection and beauty. Shifting between vulnerability and artificiality, this provocative piece zeroes in on the power of the word freedom in a mixture of dance, performance and theatrical orgy.
