MAMAN is an intimate choreographic play which traces the stages of grief. The shock, the sorrow but also the light, the memories that remain, the invisible presence that stays as a guide.
An airy space allows for the bodies of the performers to fill it all. Hip Hop at the centre as ground for self-definition and resistance, merging with Cape Verdean dances.
This project is an attempt to transform what cannot be worded into art. Silence into movement. It’s a tribute to the artist’s mother, and their Cape Verdean heritage as well as his identity as a black man. And then, a tribute to the hip hop culture that has always been there as a refuge, a tool, a community.
Câ bô perdê vontád’ d’vivê
Don’t lose your will to live
Bô destine ness’ mund’ ê ser f’liz
Your destiny in this world is to be happy
Oportunidade é pâ câ tchá perdê
The opportunity is here, not to be missed
Ê um direit’ q’bô tem na bô raíz
It’s a right that your carry from your own roots
Fatalidade, Cesária Évora
Born in Vevey (Switzerland), StalaMuerte discovered dance before he was 10 years old, first through his big brother which showed him hip hop. Fascinated by VHS tapes of battles that he watched over and over again, he taught himself his first moves. In 2008, he began to get involved in freestyle and found dance to be a real outlet for his expression.
In 2019, he achieved a turning point with a duo with Diablo, under the name Los Diablos Dela Muerte, at Juste Debout, one of the world’s biggest hip-hop dance competitions. Their ground-breaking performance in the hip-hop category spurred them to the final, where they beat the legendary duo Les Twins.
Since that victory, StalaMuerte has been on an upward trajectory, teaching in international workshops, becoming a Red Bull BC One All Star, appearing in music videos and fashion campaigns, and taking on the role of artistic director on his own projects and those of other artists.
