In Mami Watta rit (Mami Watta laughs), Vénus noire reinvents occidental performing arts and cabaret. The piece brings new narratives by people of African descent who aim to promote needed social change. The representation of black bodies – as well as queer, trans and other minoritized bodies – deserve a rewriting and a new point of view.
Mami Watta rit follows this new path. It’s not only a performance, but a political act where the Vénus noires create their own contemporary myths. It’s a fantastical tale where the audience enters a parallel world where magic happens through body rituals. The characters, inspired by African mythologies, answer existential questions. In this imaginary world, phantasmatic images transform the reality of everyday life.
