From the music that she listened to while growing up in the world of American modern art, Ruth Childs has retained the instinctive intuitions of movement that take over her when she listens to their themes. Especially the great themes, those of the symphonic orchestras she would frequent with her father in New York: Beethoven of course, Tchaikovsky and his Nutcracker, the Slavic dances of Dvořák… Hearing even a glimmer of their notes awakens the imagination of her body, far from the illustrative movements which the collective unconscious links to these famous tunes. Working from these instinctive choreographic vocabularies, unexplained impulses and residual memories, she composes a dance: her first solo, fantasia.
