Maud Blandel examines our superstitions by delving into the history of the tarantella. From its origins in popular culture – a ritual to exorcise, through the medium of dance, women who had been bitten by a tarantula – to its religious significance – to receive the blessing of Saint Paul – to its current touristic expression – a festival of short, perfectly calibrated occurrences – the development of this traditional dance from Southern Italy plays witness to a particular aspect of the evolution of cultural power relationships. As a piece for four dancers, Lignes de conduite questions the forms that beliefs take, and the behaviours they entail. A quest from earth to sky through which the artist attempts to apprehend the entertaining aspect of the sacred, and the sacred aspect of entertainment.
